The Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Kailesh Kumar Singh Jagutpal, emphasized the importance of maintaining cleanliness in order to prevent the spread of Dengue Fever. With the current rainy season posing a higher risk of water accumulation, it is crucial to keep areas that may attract mosquitoes clean to avoid creating breeding grounds for these disease-carrying insects.
Dr Jagutpal chaired a Multisectoral Committee meeting at the Ministry’s headquarters in Port-Louis on Thursday 27 June 2024, to address the prevalence of Dengue Fever and Leptospirosis in Mauritius. He reported a decrease in active cases of Dengue Fever, with a total of 6,673 cases recorded to date, 46 of which are currently active, and eight related deaths reported. Five patients are currently hospitalized due to Dengue Fever.
The Minister credited Mauritius’ successful control of Dengue Fever to strategic measures implemented with the support of various partners, including extensive clean-up initiatives countrywide. Ongoing efforts to reduce mosquito larvae density are vital in further curbing the disease’s prevalence.
While specific regions like Rivière du Rempart, Pamplemousses, and Vacoas remain dengue-affected, Minister Jagutpal stressed the importance of intensified efforts to prevent the infection from spreading. He outlined the necessity of sustained clean-up campaigns, health surveys, inspections, and awareness programs until the disease’s incubation period has passed. In addressing Leptospirosis, the Minister reported 55 cases, two active cases, nine deaths, and 44 successful recoveries so far.
