The Quartier Militaire Mediclinic has taken a significant step forward in providing quality healthcare services to patients in the surrounding regions with the launch of its new Dialysis Unit.

As part of the government’s endeavour to decentralise healthcare services and enhance the quality of life for citizens, the Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Kailesh Kumar Singh Jagutpal, visited the Quartier Militaire Mediclinic on Tuesday 23 July 2024, to take stock of the infrastructural facilities set up at the new Dialysis Unit.

The Minister highlighted that the Quartier Militaire Mediclinic is the first mediclinic to have set up a Dialysis Unit, equipped with five machines to cater for around 30 patients. Until recently, dialysis services were available only in seven public hospitals, including Souillac and Long Mountain hospitals. With the opening of this new Dialysis Unit, citizens will now benefit from eight Dialysis Units in public institutions.

Currently, around 1,500 patients are undergoing dialysis treatment in Mauritius, with a projected increase due to the high incidence of non-communicable diseases. To address this growing demand, the Ministry has expanded and modernised renal dialysis services in all hospitals to provide high-quality care.

In addition, new Dialysis Units have been set up and state-of-the-art dialysis equipment have been installed at different units. The Ministry has also embarked on a project to replace old dialysis equipment since 2019.

Furthermore, works are underway for renal transplant services, with a Renal Transplant Unit comprising 50 machines being set up at Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital with the assistance of the Government of India. The construction of the building is in progress and is expected to be operational soon.

The launch of this new Dialysis Unit is a significant milestone in Mauritius’ healthcare sector, providing citizens with improved access to quality healthcare services and enhancing their overall well-being.
