In commemoration of the 125th Birth Anniversary of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR), the nation reflects on his profound legacy as both a distinguished political leader and a humanist who inspired Mauritians to believe in their collective potential.
On Thursday 18 September 2025, Prime Minister Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam inaugurated a First Day Cover dedicated to SSR and launched an exhibition titled ‘The Life and Legacy of SSR’ at the City Council of Port Louis. The event was organized to honor SSR’s contributions and was held in conjunction with the anniversary celebrations. The exhibition offers a comprehensive overview of SSR’s life, vision and achievements, highlighting his roles as Mayor of Port Louis, Prime Minister of Mauritius, and Governor-General.
The ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Paul Raymond Bérenger, ministers, junior ministers, members of the National Assembly, members of the diplomatic corps and other distinguished personalities. The event was organized by the Ministry of Arts and Culture in collaboration with the Port Louis City Council and Mauritius Post Ltd.
During his address, Prime Minister Ramgoolam emphasized that the occasion serves to honor and celebrate the enduring legacy of SSR, widely regarded as the Father of the Nation and the Architect of Mauritius’s independence. He highlighted SSR’s steady dedication to the country’s progress, especially his commitment to expanding educational opportunities, which created new avenues for social mobility and laid the groundwork for national development.
The Prime Minister also reflected on SSR’s core values of patriotism, humility, service and belief in the potential of every Mauritian. These principles guided major reforms, including the establishment of the University of Mauritius in 1965. His emphasis on accessible healthcare, social justice and equal opportunities ensured that all citizens could aspire to a better future.
On the international front, SSR worked tirelessly to strengthen diplomatic ties and foster cooperation with other nations, particularly those with historic links to Mauritius.
Prime Minister Ramgoolam reaffirmed the government’s commitment to continue pursuing SSR’s vision of building a just, inclusive society where every child has the opportunity to realize their full potential.
