Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, born in 1900, is celebrated as the architect of modern Mauritius and the nation’s founding father. His journey began with medical studies in London, after which he returned to Mauritius to dedicate his life to public service and national development. From 1940 to 1953, SSR held various significant local government positions, including Municipal Councillor and Mayor of Port Louis. As Mauritius moved closer to independence, he took on crucial roles within the colonial administration, including Secretary of the Treasury, Minister of Finance and Chief Minister.

In 1965, SSR became the country’s first Premier and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of his unwavering dedication and over three decades of service. As leader of the Independence Party, he steered Mauritius to independence in March 1968 and served as the nation’s first Prime Minister until June 1982. Under his leadership, Mauritius gained international recognition, joining organizations such as the United Nations and the Organisation of African Unity. Notably, in 1976, he served as Chairman of the OAU, underscoring his influence on the continental stage.

In December 1983, SSR was appointed Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief of Mauritius, representing Queen Elizabeth II. A staunch advocate for democracy, social justice and national unity, he laid the foundations of a modern Mauritius through his unwavering commitment to education, healthcare and social welfare.
