The Russian Federation has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Mauritius in its efforts to combat pollution and oil spills. This reassurance was conveyed by Mrs. Irada Zeynalova, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Mauritius, on Tuesday 16 December 2025. She made these remarks during a courtesy visit to the Minister of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, Mr. Rajesh Bhagwan, in Port-Louis.
Ambassador Zeynalova highlighted the critical importance of oil spill preparedness and response strategies, emphasizing that oil spills remain a severe environmental threat with potentially devastating effects on marine and coastal ecosystems. She also stressed the need to intensify efforts to address oceanic microplastic pollution, which poses significant harm to marine life. As part of this initiative, she proposed the establishment of a microplastic laboratory in Mauritius to enhance monitoring and assessment of the impact of microplastics on marine environments.
Furthermore, the ambassador discussed the promotion of innovative energy solutions, such as cleaner air energy technologies, to protect the planet and secure the well-being of current and future generations.
