1. Can you tell us about your journey into politics and what motivated you to join the MMM Party?
My journey into politics has always been driven by a strong desire to serve people and contribute meaningfully to the development of Mauritius. From a young age, I have been deeply involved in social work and community empowerment, and I am greatly interested in social justice. The MMM Party’s core values of equity, integrity and progressive governance have resonated strongly with me. Joining the party in 2018 was a natural step, as it gave me a platform to advocate for meaningful change and engage directly with the challenges faced by our citizens.
2. What have been some of the most memorable moments or achievements in your political career so far?
There have been several memorable moments but my participation in the 2019 general election provided me with valuable insight into the diverse dynamics and intricacies of local politics, particularly within a rural context. I embraced that experience as an opportunity to grow, adapt and evolve within the political landscape. It deepened my understanding of grassroots engagement and strengthened my commitment to public service. I have a future project to turn that life experience into a book.
3. How has your experience in domestic politics prepared you for your new role as Mauritius’s ambassador to Pakistan?
Domestic politics equips one with a deep understanding of national priorities, public expectations and the importance of consensus-building. As a politician, you learn to listen, negotiate and represent diverse views — all of which are essential in diplomacy. I believe this background provides me a strong foundation to represent Mauritius with sensitivity, engage with stakeholders constructively and deepen bilateral ties with Pakistan.
4. Pakistan is a diverse and vibrant country. What opportunities do you see for strengthening Mauritius-Pakistan relations?
There is vast potential for enhanced cooperation between Mauritius and Pakistan in trade, education, tourism and cultural exchange. Pakistan’s entrepreneurial spirit and rich heritage can complement Mauritius’s strategic location and investment climate. I also see opportunities in halal finance, halal tourism, information technology and collaboration in regional multilateral forums. Strengthening people-to-people ties through student exchange, academic partnerships and business forums is but a few areas to explore.
5. In your opinion, what are the key qualities that have contributed to your success in politics and now in diplomacy?
Do not enter politics merely in pursuit of personal success or recognition. Politics is not a career path for the faint-hearted or the self-serving. It demands a deep sense of purpose, a drive to serve and an unwavering commitment to the greater good. If you are not genuinely driven by the desire to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives, politics may not be the right place for you. True political engagement is rooted in serving people. Without that inner drive, involvement in politics becomes counterproductive.
In both politics and diplomacy, relationships matter — and the ability to connect with people across backgrounds, respect diverse views and remain focused on common goals is key.
6. Looking back at your journey, what advice would you give to those who want to follow a similar path?
It has been a long engagement and involvement for me, one that goes beyond titles or positions. It is a journey shaped by commitment, humility, perseverance and a genuine commitment to serve. Listen more, speak less, build trust and act with integrity.
Read widely — it is essential — from newspapers and policy journals to history, economics and human development. It broadens your worldview, sharpens your critical thinking and helps you engage in meaningful dialogue with diverse stakeholders. Knowledge is not just power; in politics, it is responsibility. A well-informed leader is better equipped to serve with wisdom, foresight and integrity.
Stay grounded, remain true to your values and never lose sight of why you started. Over the years, I have come to understand that leadership in politics is not about quick wins but about sustained service. Each step I have taken has been guided by the belief that meaningful change begins with genuine intent and sustained effort. It is this conviction that continues to shape my path in public life.
Politics and diplomacy are not about personal ambition but about serving people. Learn constantly, surround yourself with honest people and be willing to make sacrifices for the greater good. The path is not always easy but it is deeply rewarding when driven by purpose.
7. How do you stay motivated and inspired to serve your country at both the national and international levels?
My motivation derives from the belief that serving people genuinely is one of the highest callings. Knowing that even a small decision or gesture can have a positive impact on someone’s life inspires me to continue. I also draw strength from my roots, my family, especially my wife, who has been very patient and supportive all the way through, and of course, the resilience of the Mauritian people. They remind me why I do what I do.
8. What message would you like to share with young Mauritians aspiring to serve their country through politics or diplomacy?
You are the future of Mauritius. Do not be afraid to dream big but always be prepared to work hard and stay ethical. The world needs leaders who are compassionate, thoughtful, honest and visionary. Whether in politics or diplomacy, stay informed, stay humble and remember: leadership is about lifting others not yourself. Mauritius needs your energy, your ideas and your courage.
