[Editorial] From Despair to Hope: How Legal and Social Reforms Can Save Lives

Child abandonment and femicide are no longer isolated headlines — they have become daily tragedies that expose the deep fractures within society. Every story of a child left forsaken or a woman unjustly murdered serves as a stark reminder that society is failing in its most fundamental duty: protecting its most vulnerable members. The pressing question still remains: how many lives must be lost or abandoned before meaningful, systemic change is achieved?

These tragic incidents stem from broken families, irresponsible parenting and social vices that threaten the nation’s very fabric. For how many more years will the call for action be ignored or delayed? How many victims who voice their suffering are truly protected? Despite repeated declarations of concern, why do such tragedies persist?

The root causes lie in neglecting the foundations of familial stability. Weak family laws, leniency in parental accountability, social stigmas and inadequate support systems all contribute to a destructive cycle of neglect and violence. Superficial measures — such as reactive law enforcement or empty rhetoric — are insufficient. Addressing these issues requires comprehensive reforms that target their roots.

A strategic action plan must be implemented to strengthen family units and promote social justice through targeted legal, educational and community initiatives. This plan emphasizes the enforcement of stricter penalties for parental abandonment, the revision of divorce laws to prioritize the best interests of children and the promotion of shared parenting responsibilities.

Key components include mandatory parenting workshops, emotional intelligence education and community outreach programmes designed to foster shared responsibility and mutual respect within families. Workplace policies should also be reformed to support work-life balance, with flexible hours and mental health services — especially for women — to promote well-being and stability within families.

Legal reforms should focus on simplifying procedures for family law cases, enforcing penalties for neglect and abuse and ensuring that child support is adequate and effectively maintained. Equally important are accessible mental health services, community support groups and rehabilitation centres that provide holistic care for both victims and offenders.

The foundation of a stronger Mauritius rests on the strength of its families. When families are supported — emotionally, socially and legally — children flourish, societal cohesion improves and crime rates decline. Every life protected and every child nurtured is a step toward a more just and compassionate society.

The need for collective action is urgent. Authorities, communities, NGOs and individuals must unite to implement these reforms. The future of the nation depends on creating an environment where every family is protected, every child’s rights are upheld and every individual has the opportunity to thrive.

The path forward is clear — comprehensive legal reforms, strengthened social support systems, enhanced education and active community engagement.

It is now imperative to take decisive action to create a Mauritius where families are strong and society is fair and equitable.
