In the realm of education, there exists a powerful platform that nurtures the art of effective communication and leadership skills among Mauritius’ youth—the Mauritius National Public Speaking Competition. Sponsored by the Embassy of the United States of America, the British High Commission, the British Council, and Curtin Mauritius, this prestigious event serves as a beacon for talented young individuals to showcase their oratory prowess and present their unique perspectives on global issues.

The recent National Finals, held on Tuesday 2 April 2024, at Charles Telfair Education (Curtin Mauritius), witnessed an impressive display of eloquence and intellect as participants took the stage under the theme “A Great Leader Can Change the World in an Instant.” Students from various schools across Mauritius poured their hearts and minds into their speeches, aiming to inspire, provoke thought, and capture the essence of leadership in today’s society.

Emerging victorious in the competition was Kiransingh Sewraj from Royal College Curepipe, whose articulate delivery and compelling content distinguished him as the winner of the 2024 edition. Sewraj’s ability to engage the audience, convey his message with conviction, and embody the qualities of a great leader set him apart in a pool of exceptional speakers. Bhavya Sharma Rampooortab from College du St Esprit secured the runner-up position, showcasing her own unique style and perspective on the theme.

The English-Speaking Union (ESU), founded in London in 1918, stands as a cornerstone in promoting effective communication skills and public speaking among youth globally. In Mauritius, the ESU plays a pivotal role in organizing flagship events such as the National Public Speaking Competition and National Spelling Bee Competition, which serve as catalysts for personal growth, self-expression, and intercultural exchange.

The ESU’s International Public Speaking Competition holds a special place in the hearts of aspiring speakers worldwide, bringing together talented individuals from over 55 countries to compete in London. Winners from each nation have the opportunity to participate in this esteemed global event, where they not only showcase their public speaking skills but also foster cultural understanding and forge lifelong connections with like-minded individuals.

Reflecting on the significance of platforms like the National Public Speaking Competition is to recognise the profound impact in shaping the leaders of tomorrow.  Beyond honing communication skills, these events instill confidence, critical thinking, and empathy—essential traits for navigating an ever-changing world with grace and resilience.

In celebrating the power of effective communication and nurturing the next generation of leaders, students, educators, and the broader community are invited to recognize the value of investing in youth development through initiatives like the Mauritius National Public Speaking Competition.
