The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Arts and Culture and the Commission of Arts and Culture for Rodrigues, aimed at strengthening artistic exchanges, preserving heritage, and enhancing cultural development between the two islands, was the focus of discussions, on Thursday 20 February 2025, in Port Louis.

A delegation led by the Commissioner of Arts and Culture for Rodrigues, Mr Joseph Varok Ravina, paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Mahendra Gondeea.

In a statement, Minister Gondeea underlined the necessity of formalising the longstanding collaboration between Mauritius and Rodrigues in the arts and cultural sectors. He stressed the importance of revising and finalising the MoU to align with current cultural priorities and to consolidate the partnership.

Furthermore, the Minister elaborated on ways to extend cultural education and training opportunities for young people. The role of the Centre de Lecture et d’Animation Culturelle (CLAC) network in Rodrigues was thus brought forward, with the imperative of assessing and revitalising its activities to better support the local community. Additionally, the logistical challenges faced by the Mauritius Society of Authors (MASA) Branch office in Rodrigues and the Ministry’s commitment to exploring potential solutions were also discussed.

Mr Gondeea welcomed several proposals made by the Rodriguan delegation such as the introduction of courses in music and other artistic disciplines to provide children and youths with opportunities to engage in creative activities beyond their academic and sports commitments. The Minister made mention of the participation of a representative from Rodrigues in the upcoming Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage scheduled in New Delhi in December 2025. This international exposure would greatly enhance the promotion of Rodriguan culture on a global scale, he said.

Commissioner Joseph Varok Ravina, for his part, expressed appreciation for the Minister’s commitment to revitalising cultural exchanges between Mauritius and Rodrigues. He reiterated the necessity of formalising the MoU to establish a structured framework for cooperation in the arts and heritage sectors. The Commissioner pointed out the need for increased support for Rodriguan artists and cultural practitioners, particularly through access to training, resources, and platforms to showcase their talents.

According to Mr Ravina, knowledge-sharing and capacity-building are key factors in elevating the arts and culture sectors in both Rodrigues and Mauritius. He mentioned the potential of cultural tourism, noting that its development could benefit local artists and promote the unique cultural heritage of Rodrigues.
