National Assembly Hosts Training for Young Participants of NYP 2025

Training sessions for the Fourth Edition of the National Youth Parliament (NYP) officially launched on Mondayn 4 August 2025, at the Receptorium of the National Assembly in Port-Louis, in preparation for the upcoming event scheduled for 21 and 22 August and 2025.

Organized by the Mauritius National Assembly, NYP 2025 aims to provide young people with a platform to discuss issues of national and international significance within a parliamentary framework. The initiative seeks to foster an interest in parliamentary history, etiquette, and procedures, while also developing essential skills such as public speaking, presentation, leadership and decision-making. Additionally, it offers opportunities for participants to network with fellow citizens, promoting the achievement of shared goals.

The young participants were warmly welcomed by the Speaker of the Mauritius National Assembly, Mrs. Shirin Aumeeruddy-Cziffra. In her address, she emphasized the vital role of Parliament in democratic countries, highlighting its independence and its central function in governance. She explained the system of checks and balances among the Legislature, the Executive, and the Judiciary and elaborated on how Parliament is responsible for making laws and holding the Executive accountable.

Mrs. Aumeeruddy-Cziffra assured the participants that the training sessions would equip them with various techniques and strategies used by members of the National Assembly to perform their duties effectively. She expressed her confidence that this platform would help young people become responsible citizens, sharpen their communication and public speaking skills and enable them to articulate and defend their views respectfully.

She also encouraged the participants to be bold and fearless, urging them to respect their peers at all times. Concluding her speech, she reaffirmed her commitment to upholding the principles of rights, respect and responsibility, inspiring the young attendees to embrace these values as they prepare for their roles in shaping the future.
