In 2024, both electricity and water consumption experienced significant growth, reflecting changing consumption patterns and ongoing development. According to the latest data published by the Bureau of Statistics, these increases highlight important trends in energy and water use across the country.
On the electricity front, the transportation and manufacturing sectors remain the primary consumers. Transportation alone accounted for 51.6% of the electricity produced, while the manufacturing sector used nearly 20%. In 2024, 53% of the electricity was generated by independent producers, with the remaining 47% supplied by the Central Electricity Board. In terms of energy sources, coal continued to be the dominant fuel, representing 30% of electricity generation, followed by heavy oil. Renewable energies, however, made up only 18.2% of the mix, remaining a relatively small share.
The highest electricity demand was recorded in February 2024, with a peak of 525.7 megawatts — an increase of 3.4% compared to February 2023.
Regarding water consumption, domestic use also continued its upward trend. On average, each person used 260 liters of potable water per day in 2024, about ten liters more than the previous year. This increase occurred despite a 14% reduction in rainfall during the same period, indicating a rising trend in water use amid drier climatic conditions.
