On Sunday 23 March 2025, a gathering was held by the FAZ (Fam Ape Zwenn) movement at the Loreto College of Rose-Hill, where numerous women and prominent figures came together to celebrate International Women’s Day from a fresh perspective.
It was stated by the Speaker of the National Assembly, “I don’t need to be loved, I need to be respected. I’m not involved in partisan politics”. In her remarks, the importance of respect in her role was emphasized. It was shared that she fears no one in the National Assembly of Mauritius.
During her speech, Shirin Aumeeruddy-Cziffra highlighted that she has not been part of FAZ since 29 November 2024. However, commendation was given for the commitment and struggle of women within the movement, along with an affirmation of ongoing dedication to amplifying women’s voices. “I will continue to stand by your side”, she said.
At the event, Jocelyne Minerve, one of the founders of FAZ, reminded attendees that the movement serves as a platform for sharing the journeys of many female fighters, highlighting the challenges women face and illustrating how various sharing workshops cultivate role models for others. “Our vision is to bring light where hope may have faded. FAZ is not just a movement; it is a place where every woman belongs. Empowering women remains one of our priorities, and witnessing those who have faced violence or discrimination succeed inspires us to persist in our vision for future generations”, she stated.
Emotional testimonies were also shared by various women at the gathering, recounting their struggles and how overcoming adversity has fostered personal growth.
