Dr. Mahend Gungapersad, the Minister of Education and Human Resources, has called upon all stakeholders in the education sector to come together effectively and thoughtfully to tackle the pressing issue of bullying in schools. He emphasized the vital role that parents play in this endeavor, underscoring their importance in fostering a safe and respectful environment for students.
Speaking on Monday 24th March 2025, at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute in Moka, Dr. Gungapersad addressed heads of primary and secondary schools, as well as representatives from the Special Education Needs and Disability Resource Centres from Zones 2, 3 and 4. Present at the meeting were Mr. Ravi Meettook, Senior Chief Executive of the Ministry, along with representatives from the Ministry of Health and Wellness, the Police Department and other key stakeholders.
In his remarks, Dr. Gungapersad highlighted that both physical and emotional bullying remain critical concerns demanding immediate attention and proactive measures within schools. He announced plans to observe the International Day Against Bullying on 4th May 2025, urging schools to initiate awareness-raising activities to highlight the detrimental impact of bullying on education.
The Minister also addressed the broader societal context surrounding bullying, recognizing the complex challenges schools face in managing this issue. He pointed out that family dynamics, the influence of social media and societal problems such as domestic violence and verbal abuse significantly shape student behavior and contribute to the prevalence of bullying. These external factors, he noted, must be accounted for when seeking effective solutions.
Furthermore, Dr. Gungapersad encouraged school leaders to cultivate an atmosphere of respect and support within their institutions. He urged heads of schools and educators to lead by example, embodying values of empathy, kindness and inclusivity. The Minister asserted that schools can mitigate bullying and foster healthier peer relationships by establishing a culture of care. He also stressed the importance of early interventions to address signs of bullying before they escalate into more serious issues.
The Minister reiterated the responsibility of school leaders to implement clear guidelines and policies to address the issue of bullying. He urged them to collaborate closely with parents, students and the wider community to ensure a collective approach to tackling bullying rather than addressing it in isolation. This strategy, he emphasized, will require open communication and a united effort for long-term solutions.
Minister Gungapersad reaffirmed the necessity for collaboration and commitment in combating bullying. He expressed confidence that through collective action, the education sector can overcome this challenge and establish safe, supportive school environments where students can thrive without fear.
