In his opening remarks, Dr. Boolell emphasized the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability, stressing the importance of productive dialogue among all stakeholders. “Our objective is to work in unison to develop actionable proposals that can effectively combat the ill-treatment of animals”, he stated, reiterating the need for compassion and respect for all creatures.
Junior Minister David echoed this sentiment, highlighting the necessity of caring for and protecting animals and addressing their needs. He underscored the importance of consultative meetings with NGOs to delve deeper into the issues regarding stray animals and the mistreatment they often face.
David proposed several potential solutions, including a review and update of the Animal Welfare Act, public sensitization campaigns, and programs for sterilization and adoption of stray animals. “Our aim is to ensure real animal welfare in our country”, he declared.
The meeting marks a proactive step by the government to engage stakeholders in finding sustainable solutions to improve the lives of stray animals and enhance overall animal welfare in Mauritius.
