In a move to bolster bilateral efforts towards advancing women’s rights and empowerment, Mauritius and India are intensifying their cooperation. On Monday 13 July 2026, a fruitful discussion took place during a courtesy call between the Deputy Prime Minister of Mauritius, Mrs. Marie Arianne Navarre-Marie, and the High Commissioner of the Republic of Mauritius to India, Mrs. Sheilabai Bappoo, in Port Louis.
Mrs. Bappoo, who is currently visiting Mauritius for a two-week period, expressed her strong commitment to working closely with both governments for the welfare and development of women. She underscored India’s remarkable progress in promoting gender equality and highlighted the importance of encouraging greater participation of women across all sectors, especially in politics.
In her statement following the meeting, Mrs. Bappoo praised Mrs. Navarre-Marie for her achievements in the political arena, acknowledging her relentless efforts to safeguard women’s rights and promote gender equality. She emphasized that women are the backbone of any nation—integral to the economy, culture, family, and society at large—and deserve equal opportunities to realize their full potential.
The discussions reinforce the shared commitment of Mauritius and India to empowering women as a vital component of sustainable development and social progress. Both sides agreed to explore avenues for increased collaboration, including knowledge exchange, joint initiatives, and capacity-building programs aimed at fostering gender inclusivity and women’s leadership.
As Mauritius continues to forge ahead in building an inclusive society, partnerships like these with India highlight the importance of regional cooperation in achieving gender equality and empowering women to become active agents of change.
