
Kailash Purryag, former President of the Republic of Mauritius, passed away on Saturday 21 June 2025, at the age of 77. His death marks the end of a distinguished career dedicated to public service and national development.
Kailash Purryag’s illustrious political career began in 1976 when he was first elected as a Member of Parliament representing the Labour Party. Over the years, he held various key positions, including responsibilities within Social Security, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He served as Vice-Premier Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, and later was elected President of the National Assembly. Ultimately, he served as the President of Mauritius, a position through which he made significant contributions to the nation.
Born on 12 December 1947, Kailash Purryag’s early life was marked by a strong commitment to education and community service. He studied at the University of Mauritius and later obtained a degree in Law, which laid the foundation for his interest in politics and governance. He drew inspiration from prominent leaders such as Singapore’s former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, whose vision and leadership greatly influenced his approach to governance and nation-building. Purryag believed in pragmatic development, social cohesion and inclusive growth — principles he consistently advocated throughout his career.
He was married to Aneetah Purryag since 8 December 1973 and they have a daughter, Anuradha Purryag, who is married to Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr. Dhananjay Ramful, also known as Ritish Ramful.
In 2011, he was elected President of Mauritius, succeeding Sir Anerood Jugnauth. His presidency was characterized by efforts to promote national unity, social harmony and economic development. His tenure focused on strengthening democratic institutions and fostering dialogue among diverse communities. He was known for his humility, integrity and dedication to serving the Mauritian people. His leadership was regarded as a stabilizing force during challenging times, including periods of economic fluctuation and social tensions.
His passing has elicited heartfelt tributes from across the political spectrum. Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam expressed his sadness, stating, “We are saddened by the passing of Kailash Purryag. His contribution to our democratic journey has left an indelible mark. We will remember him as a man of integrity and dedication to our nation. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and loved ones”.
President Dharam Gokhool also paid homage, saying, “His contribution to the democratic journey of our nation has left an indelible mark. He was a man deeply devoted to our country and its values. May his soul rest in peace”.
Other leaders, including former Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth and Opposition Leader Joe Lesjongard, also paid their respects, emphasizing his loyalty, dignity and service.
Many political figures and citizens alike have expressed their grief and appreciation for his lifelong service.
His funeral took place on Sunday 22 June 2025, with participation from national leaders and friends honoring his legacy.
