World Day for Safety and Health at Work: Open Day raises workplace safety awareness

In the context of the upcoming World Day for Safety and Health at Work on 28 April 2024, the Ministry of Agro-Industry and Food Security, organised an open day, on Thursday 25 April 2024 at the Farmers Service Centre in Saint Pierre.

The event, themed ‘Impacts of Climate Change on Occupational Safety and Health,’ was attended by the Minister of Agro-Industry and Food Security, Mr Mahen Kumar Seeruttun, along with other distinguished personalities.

In a statement, Minister Seeruttun emphasised the importance of celebrating World Day for Safety and Health at Work to ensure that workplaces are healthy environments where employees’ well-being is prioritised. Stressing the need for risk-free workplaces, the Minister highlighted the impact of climate change on workers’ security and health, urging employers to mitigate risks associated with extreme temperatures and pollution.

In light of climate change’s adverse effects, particularly on small countries like Mauritius, Minister Seeruttun underscored the importance of adapting to new environmental challenges. The Government is committed to implementing measures aimed at safeguarding workers from potential hazards, he added. Underlining the necessity of sensitisation and training to assess and mitigate workplace risks, he dwelt on the importance of reducing the occurrence of work-related accidents, which can significantly impact the economy.

Furthermore, Minister Seeruttun highlighted the urgency of sensitising plantation workers about the risks associated with handling various equipment and chemicals, such as pesticides and herbicides. He, thus, accentuated the need for them to take necessary precautions to safeguard their health and well-being while on the job.
