Mauritius has issued a firm condemnation of recent threats to launch missile attacks targeting the holy sites of Mecca, in Saudi Arabia. In a statement released on September 16th, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed deep concern over these developments, emphasizing the sanctity of the holy places and the importance of their security for the global Muslim community.
The ministry underscored that these sites are sacred and must be protected from any acts of aggression or violence. It highlighted that ensuring the safety and well-being of pilgrims is a responsibility not only of Saudi Arabia but also of the international community. Mauritius condemned all attacks on religious sites across faiths and strongly opposed any acts of war that threaten the peace and security of Mecca, also known as Makkah al-Mukarramah.
This stance comes amid rising tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi movement in Yemen. The coalition led by Riyadh claimed to have intercepted a Houthi drone near Mecca on Tuesday, before it could enter the city’s restricted airspace. The Houthis, for their part, denied threatening Mecca or any other holy sites.
In its statement, Mauritius called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and urged dialogue and negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations. The government reaffirmed its commitment to global peace and expressed support for diplomatic efforts aimed at restoring stability in the Middle East.
